Bodily Modesty, Coach Dependence and Burnout in a Maldivian Olympic Career: A Meta-Autoethnographic Test of Athlete Welfare Surveillance

Open access
Athlete welfare surveillance assumes that athletes can report what is happening to their bodies and that the report reaches someone able to act. This article tests both assumptions against one documented Olympic career from a small island state. A retrospective meta-autoethnographic design was used to re-analyse two texts by the same author, a 2006 doctoral thesis and a 2026 autobiographical book. Eight episodes spanning adolescence to retirement were mapped to mechanisms from the sport ethic, men's help-seeking, organisational stress and safeguarding literatures, and were then used to test a proposed Athlete Welfare Ledger. The events occurred between the mid-1980s and 1993 and cannot indicate current prevalence. At sixteen, the athlete concealed severe groin pain and blood in his urine. He first knew no one with whom intimate symptoms could be discussed, and later expected his coach to disbelieve him. Disclosure to a half-sister who was a nurse led to treatment abroad within two weeks. Years later, the same coach arranged painkilling injections for a knee injury without explanation to the athlete, and training continued. The route that worked sat outside the coaching line; the route that harmed sat inside it. Seven of the eight documented harms would have been at least partly detectable by conventional monitoring. The exception was the first barrier, which no questionnaire requiring the athlete to name the symptom would have captured. A minimum protection standard for small sport systems is proposed, with each element linked to a documented episode.
