Mapping the Pedagogical Landscape of Outcome-Based and CDIO Frameworks in Business Education

Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and the Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate (CDIO) framework have become influential forces in higher business education. Although research has expanded progressively, the literature remains fragmented, lacking a macro-level systematic overview of its intellectual structure and spatio-temporal trends. This study addresses this gap by conducting a bibliometric mapping and visual evaluation of OBE-CDIO methodologies within business higher education using publications retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. Relational network, temporal overlay, and density visualisations were executed using VOSviewer and Scimago Graphica to unpack publication trajectories, interdisciplinary categories, institutional alliances, geographic distributions, and keyword co-occurrence patterns. The empirical results reveal that scholarly output has experienced progressive growth, culminating in high-volume production in recent years. The domain demonstrates a strong interdisciplinary orientation, heavily anchored in pedagogical categories while actively intersecting with engineering, computer applications, management, and economics. Spatially, contributing institutions and countries exhibit a highly decentralised, multi-hub global cartography driven by localised curricular reforms and global accreditation demands within rapidly growing and transitional economies. Relational keyword-based analyses indicate that the intellectual architecture is grounded in three core vectors: foundational project-based pedagogy, active teaching reforms, and systemic quality assurance mechanisms. Crucially, temporal overlay visualisations expose an evolutionary paradigm shift; earlier literature focused on macro-level generic skills and conceptual definitions, whereas contemporary frontiers have transitioned towards digitalised tool integration and precision assessment models, heavily prioritising learning analytics, educational innovation, and Integrated Cumulative Grade Point Average. Overall, this study provides a contemporary systematic mapping, offering vital diagnostics to inform future research and quality assurance practices.
