Quality Management Capabilities for Sustainable Non-Profit Organizations: A Conceptual Framework

Open access
Non-profit organizations (NPOs) operate in increasingly complex environments characterized by resource constraints, growing stakeholder expectations, accountability requirements, and sustainability challenges. As a result, identifying management approaches that support long-term organizational effectiveness, and sustainability has become an important priority for both researchers and practitioners. Although Total Quality Management (TQM) has been widely recognized as an effective management philosophy for enhancing organizational performance, its role in supporting sustainable performance within nonprofit organizations remains insufficiently explored. Furthermore, existing studies have largely focused on individual quality management practices and commercial settings, providing limited conceptual understanding of how quality management contributes to sustainability in nonprofit contexts. This paper aims to develop a conceptual framework that explains how quality management capabilities may contribute to sustainable performance in nonprofit organizations. Drawing upon the literature on quality management, sustainability, and nonprofit management, the paper proposes six interrelated capabilities: strategic leadership capability, stakeholder engagement capability, organizational learning capability, process excellence capability, service innovation capability, and evidence-based management capability. The proposed framework suggests that these capabilities collectively support sustainable performance by enhancing organizational effectiveness, stakeholder value creation, adaptability, accountability, and long-term mission achievement. The paper contributes to the literature by providing an integrated conceptual perspective that links quality management capabilities with sustainable performance in nonprofit organizations and offers a foundation for future empirical research and managerial practice.
