Views of Primary School Principals on Conflict within the School Unit

Open access
The present study examines the phenomenon of school conflicts because, as in all organizations, conflicts occur in schools as well. An attempt has been made through qualitative research to examine the views of primary school Directors in order to identify the conceptualization of conflict and to trace the groups among which school conflicts occur, the reasons that cause them, the impact they have on the members of the school community, they are managed as well as the role of the principal in their management. The study was conducted in Pella's Regional Unit. The sample consisted of thirteen Directors of Primary schools. Semi-structured interview was the basic instrument for gathering qualitative data. The results of the study revealed that school conflicts are a complex and multidimensional phenomenon, as in every school context different kinds of conflicts occur due to a variety of reasons, and they are managed in different ways. Conflicts have been revealed among all groups in the school community, with a different frequency of occurrence in every school context though. The reasons that cause them are both organizational and interpersonal. The impacts of the conflicts are considered mainly negative. Efforts are usually made to resolve conflicts by cooperative methods, while directors perceive their role as conflict managers in order to solve them.
