The emergence of a transformative approach to foreign language learning arises from a complex range of factors involving cultural changes in the context of the new media of fast-pacing communication, multimedia technology (that allows the combined use of text, graphics sound and video with the help of a computer-mediator) and the emerging technologies of electronic hypermedia (which expand hypertexts, organise multiple representational systems in a network of interlinked nodes and help coordinate the load of information resources). The potential of these new digital technologies challenge literacy practices and define the Pedagogy of Multiliteracies as a teaching approach which is designed and implemented in multicultural learning environments, assisted by multiple communication channels. The aim is to educate learners by maximising their language and cultural skills in relation to context-defined language use, either social, communicative, cultural or historical. The use of various -sometimes hybrid- media and multimedia to compose and communicate messages and meanings in a constantly evolving digital world reiterates the proponents of language teaching and learning and reframes foreign language teaching environments. The intervention of digital equipment and web tools transform both classroom setting and teaching practices. Foreign language teaching involves embarking on the educational means provided by modern technology with the aim of creating digital teaching and learning environments grounded in the pedagogical principles of interactive and cooperative learning. Students become creative in the various multimedia settings, they build and track their foreign language literacy immersed in new, dynamic learning environments. This project, entitled “Multiliteracy approaches to foreign language teaching: the use of web tools”, attempts to explore various options of web platforms and digital applications available online and outline the relationship between the pedagogical choices involving these digital means and the possible learning outcomes for the students.
