The Implementation of Home Detention with the use of Electronic Surveillance in Greece

This paper investigates the alternative punishment of home detainment with the use of electronic surveillance which was introduced in Greek legislation in 2013. Initially, the research examines the broader historical and philosophical background of the new technological application which was gradually introduced in foreign countries since the middle of the ‘80s. The survey also examines the basic characteristics of the new monitoring tool which resembles with electronic bracelet. The research focuses on the ultimate goal of adopting the new electronic application. Moreover, the new mechanism of surveillance is examined in contrast with relevant types of punishment. What is more, the survey concentrates on the penal legislation as well as on the level of acceptance of the new measure by the detainees and prisoners in Greece. Finally, the survey analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of using the electronic bracelet and presents the necessary conclusions.
