Practice is indispensable in civil aviation vocational education, yet exposure to simulated or workplace activity does not in itself show that students have learned from it. This critical narrative review examines how experiential, work-based, simulation and technology-supported learning relate to student engagement, motivation and learning challenges in vocational and aviation education. A targeted search identified 29 cited sources, which were appraised for methodological transparency, construct alignment and contextual relevance. Across this heterogeneous evidence base, preparation, authentic task design, instructor interaction, feedback, debriefing and opportunities to apply revised understanding recur as conditions that help students interpret experience. The review also shows why engagement should be separated into behavioural, emotional and cognitive dimensions and why motivation cannot be reduced to a simple intrinsic–extrinsic opposition. Reported difficulties—including weak task clarity, uneven guidance, limited resources, technology constraints, teamwork problems and workplace stress—often arise from the learning environment as well as from individual learners. On this basis, the article proposes a non-causal, learner-centred framework linking instructional design, learner responses and enabling conditions to connected cycles of preparation, supported practice, feedback and reflection.
