Challenges in Integrating Artificial Intelligence into Digital Teaching and Learning in Islamic Education

Open access
The rapid advancement of digital technology has significantly transformed the education system, including the field of Islamic Education. One of the emerging technologies that has attracted considerable attention is Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is increasingly being integrated into digital teaching and learning. The integration of AI in education enables learning to become more interactive, flexible, and student-centred through the use of adaptive learning applications, educational chatbots, intelligent tutoring systems, and automated assessment tools. In the context of Islamic Education, AI has the potential to support teachers in teaching the Qur'an, tajwid, memorisation (hifz), and the development of more innovative digital teaching and learning materials. Nevertheless, the adoption of AI in education also presents several challenges, including ethical concerns, the accuracy and authenticity of Islamic content, data security, and teachers' competency in effectively utilising AI technologies. Therefore, this conceptual paper aims to discuss the integration of Artificial Intelligence in digital teaching and learning within Islamic Education, with particular emphasis on the forms of AI application, its significance, and the challenges encountered by Islamic Education teachers. This study employs a document analysis approach based on a review of relevant literature, including journal articles, scholarly publications, and reports related to digital education and AI in education. The findings suggest that AI has the potential to enhance the effectiveness of teaching and learning in Islamic Education when implemented systematically, ethically, and in accordance with the principles and values of Islamic Education.
